Mint: A money management tool that doesn’t suck:
Hate spending time keeping track of where your money goes? Check out Mint, a new and free money management tool for people who hate managing money. Mint allows you to view all of your banking and credit card transactions side-by-side, making identifying all of your transactions much easier and faster than ever before. How does this help you? We make it easy for you to track down erroneous charges or bank fees, and keep a closer eye on your money. Mint even lets you label your transactions so you know what bills you need to split with your friends or roommates, know which ones need to be reimbursed for your company, and more. I’ve been in the private beta for two weeks (it’s now public), and it’s become my favorite financial tool. The setup is simple. Just enter the login information for your financial accounts and Mint aggregates all the data, presenting you with an easy-to-read dashboard of your finances. It’ll even suggest ways you can save money based on your spending habits. Mint’s off to a great start, but it needs a few missing features to really round-out the service. For example, I’d love to see a bill-pay system and a way to track stock portfolios. Note: This is not a paid review, but they did interview me in June. Click here to check it out.

High quality album art (from Apple): With Apple emphasizing Cover Flow more and more in the new iPods, etc., the need for good quality album art is ever increasing. I know iTunes is supposed to grab art for songs that are in your library and the iTunes Store, but in my experience it hasn’t worked that well.

Fortunately, Josh Powell has cooked up a nice little site called Josh’s iTunes Album Art Grabber that lets you search the iTunes album art repository and download high quality jpgs from Apple’s servers. In my brief test (with Springsteen albums), most of the cover art came back as 600 x 600px. However, some albums featured art up to 1425 x 1425 or higher.

The search engine is rather strict (”White Stripes” returned nothing, it had to be “The White Stripes”), but this looks like an excellent resource for filling in holes in your collection.

Rubicode - RCDefaultApp is a Mac OS X 10.2 or higher preference pane that allows a user to set the default application used for various URL schemes, file extensions, file types, MIME types, and Uniform Type Identifiers (or UTIs; MacOS 10.4 only). MacOS X uses the extension and file type settings to choose the application when opening a file in Finder, while Safari and other applications use the URL and MIME type settings at other times for content not related to a file (such as an unknown URL protocol, or a media stream).

Widgetschmiede • widgets • Ubertragen: Übertragen is a widget designed to transfer files, be it to an FTP-server, to another Mac running Übertragen on your local network (through Bonjour) or to one of your Bluetooth-devices. It was designed with quick uploads in mind and thanks to the dashboard it is always available immediately. Just grab your files, call Dashboard, hover over the widget and it presents all your FTP accounts, nearby Macs and your Bluetooth-devices in an exposé-like manner. Too easy.
